Introducing ZINO LOCI, a shared imaginary location that seeks to bring visual and creative voices together annually on shared themes. Zineopolis is excited to welcome a new collaborative zine project between students at University of Portsmouth, UK and between students at University of Portsmouth, UK, and Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. The project is run collectively by Jackie Batey, Nicolas Verstappen, and Jonathan Scott. The first issue of this collaborative zine is themed around GUILT and SHAME. We visually researching how these complex emotions are visualised through narrative, comics, sequential illustration and artistic expression.

Zino Loci is now live! available in limited quantities as a physical, printed zine although all artwork and artist statements can be read through on the Zino Loci website here. It was a wonderful journey working along side Dr.Jac Batey and Nicolas Verstappen on this project, it’s an area that i’ve grown to love immensely, being able to empower artists to show their unfiltered messages through their artwork. I find that the themes of Guilt and Shame to be somewhat “evergreen”, so much of our global cultures can be weaved with either concept, despite how superficially different we all may seem. Working as the facilitator/ designer on this book felt very much appropriate for me personally, as I’ve somewhat got a foot in each culture examined over the volume – I’m originally from Portsmouth, in the UK but i’ve been living with my wife in Bangkok, Thailand since 2021. The differences and similarities in cultures and individuals approaches or feelings towards it are a constant fascination of mine, through my teaching work i’ve observed a definite contrast between the attitudes towards tradition and culture between the younger generation and the old guard.
Zino Loci is an ongoing project and will continue to pose thought provoking themes and questions explored through an eclectic range of talents.
